Things I Didn't Expect (When I Was Expecting) - Book Review

This is a most fabulous read, not only because of the candidness and humour of the author, but the juxtapositioning of her personal experience with well-researched historical and cultural content.

It's a down-to-earth book about pregnancy and birth that both women and men can get something out of. It debunks myths and tells it how it is, unlike most publications I've seen on pregnancy and birth which tend to patronise by sugar-coating reality.

I've never been pregnant nor am I planning to be. I bought a copy of this book for myself (which several friends have asked to borrow) and a copy for a pregnant girlfriend. Whenever I mention it to someone, it triggers a flicker of recognition and interest; "I've heard of that book" or "I heard her on the radio". Of course, that may mean good PR, but this book is an interesting and revealing read, insightful and refreshingly honest.

I grimaced, I laughed, and I thought to myself "too much information" as I greedily devoured more. Of course, every woman will have her own pregnancy journey and symptoms; some may not want to know beforehand what might occur, but there will be other women who will have moments of OMG why did NO ONE TELL ME?! This book is for you.

Things I Didn't Expect (When I Was Expecting) shouldn't turn you off pregnancy or birth. Rather, it prepares you and arms you with a sense of humour. Anyone who happens to pick it up and flip to a chapter will be wide-eyed and set straight.
