Their Finest – Film Review

Their Finest is a likable British comedy period drama about a group of scriptwriters and film makers attempting to make an inspirational film to boost morale during the Blitz of London during World War II.

Catrin Colen (Gemma Arteron) is assigned to contribute a female perspective to war films produced by the British Ministry of Information's Film Division. The team work on a script which is based on a fictionalised account of some British civilians rescuing soldiers after the retreat at Dunkirk.

The movie is based on the book by Lissa Evans called "Their Finest Hour and a Half". Catrin supports her injured artist husband while being mentored at work by the unflappable editor Tom Buckley (Sam Claflin). Their Finest sparkles with witty banter and the fading actor Ambrose Hillard (Bill Nighy) provides an essential element.

Their Finest gives you a good sense of how women were treated in the 1940s. From the "Obviously, we can't pay you as much as the chaps" comment to "a lot of men are scared we won't go back into our boxes when this is all over'.

But the film sways a thin line between comedy and gritty drama set against the bombing of England. It nearly hits the two-hour mark and I would have liked to have seen a tighter edit. My companion and myself did wonder about the choice of ending (I promise I won't spoil it).

Their Finest is an enjoyable wartime film with some of Britain's up and coming talent about living in the moment.
