Exhibition: King Kong costumes
Image Melbourne Spring Fashion Week

Forget about King Kong taking over New York - it is Melbourne you have to worry about. He has even nuzzled his way into Melbourne Spring Fashion Week.

Or at least the extravagant costumes from the production have.

This free exhibition traces costume designer Roger Kirk's amazing creations.

Kirk created over 100 different costumes. They of course had to have a thirties flavour but at the same time be practical enough for actors to be able to fly through the air.

Then there were the costumes for the puppeteers who control the monster and have to be invisible to the audience. Kirk experimented with 200 types of fabric to find one that would make these puppeteers vanish when the infra-red projection goes on.

The photographic display shows the development process of many of the stunning costumes and the behind the scenes work that went into them, culminating in the final shots from the production.

Everything King Kong is so fashionable at the moment, it is hardly surprising he is taking over Melbourne Spring Fashion Week as well.
