Family friendly weekend lunches at the pub can be a challenge in the middle of sophisticated wine country, but not for the Grand Hotel in the heart of the Yarra Glen (19 Bell Street, Yarra Glen, Victoria).

Romantic weekend getaways and wineries go hand in hand, so it was a bit of an ask to go on a Saturday afternoon family adventure with two little monsters under the age of five. Having set our sat-nav to the Hargreaves Brewery, we were disappointed to find the inviting reception rooms with lit fire places and smells of deliciousness was fully occupied. The only seating available was at the front roadside which was stripped of all its inner charms.

We headed a few doors over to the Grand Hotel. It was a handsome white Georgian style building which was of "Castle" appearance to the four year old's curiousity which grew into much interest as we surveyed the dining rooms offering a kids' play area kitted out with a horse, cubby house and colouring things for ankle biters and above.

Lunch venue was settled. The menu was extensive. The oysters kilpatrick were done very nicely, not salty at all which is always a risk with this dish. Kids' chicken nuggets and chips was a huge serving with a jelly cup and choc frog to please any fussy eater. Beer battered fish and chips were crisp and hot with salad, while the neighbouring table had a sharing platter which was capable of making anyone envious, even on a full tummy.

Staff were friendly and acceptable of noisy kids. No harsh stares that are usually dished out in fine dining places. Though, there is a separate fine dining area with white table clothes for those desiring more formal, kids-free ambience.

At the end of the visit, we followed some patrons out to check out the beer garden to be surprised with a children's play area. Complete with two slippery dips and lots of climbing equipment. We left with the idea that the Grand Hotel being a possibility of a 5th birthday party venue welcoming family with friends. Imagine a birthday party in a castleā€¦

Be sure to take a peak at the half dozen or so antique stores on the opposite side of the street for a bit of nostalgia.
