Get Your Punk On
The World's Greatest Shave requires little introduction. Launched in '97, one of Australia's largest fundraising events. Since inception, generating millions in the battle against blood cancer. With no ongoing government support, the Leukaemia Foundation depending on such donations. This annual injection, enabling preventative/curative research investment, plus support for sufferers.

In 2016, the tradition continues. Shaving, colouring, waxing (not your head), wigging up, donning hair extensions. Official dates, March 10th-13th, numerous upcoming events, plus opportunities to host your own. All in the name of sponsorship to help achieve the Leukaemia Foundation's strategic objectives. To locate nearby events, either type in your postcode and click 'search!', or click 'show all shave events' (beneath that search! button).

Join the likes of former punks: Meshel Laurie, Larry Emdur, Michael Klim, Collingwood Magpies, Adelaide Crows, and Brisbane Bandits, as you lend your head this March. Many venues, even providing free shaves/colours (not permanent - unless you adamantly demand it). You can also sponsor registered friends, relatives, and coworkers. To get involved, easy peasy. However, loads of extra info. So instead of me waffling, let's jump to my 'RAQ':

What exactly's the World's Greatest Shave?

Charity fundraising event. It's aim, to boost essential funds for the Leukemia Foundation.

What exactly's the Leukaemia Foundation?

Australia's peak body for blood cancer. Main functions: strategic investment to develop cures/treatments for blood cancer. Plus provide free services to patients and their families.

Is it actually the world's greatest shave?

Weird question, yeah. Um, anyway. Technically, no. Said title, awarded to Charlize Theron's recent buzz cut. General consensus, that James Franco's bare noggin's probably the worst.

Why support it?

To fight blood cancer. Three main groups (leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma), an average of 31 Australians are diagnosed daily. Approximately, 12,000 annually.

Yes, but why support it?

Um. Really? I thought I just... Anyway, look. There's two main areas requiring financial support: Vision to Cure, and Mission to Care.

Vision to Care relates to The Leukaemia Foundation's strategically targeted multi-million dollar investments. Mission to Care, their ongoing assistance to patients & their families (ie. treatment, transport, accommodation for regionally-based families).

How can I get involved?

1) be brave, and undergo an experimental haircut (individually or as a team)
2) contribute financially by sponsoring someone/donating directly
3) volunteer for various WGS activities.

As mentioned, many venues provide free cut/colours to registrants. Unregistered participants, making a $5 - $20 donation for these services.

But why this particular fundraiser?

Cos it makes a difference. For instance, more than 80% of kids survive acute lymphoblastic leukaemia today, compared to 20% a few decades ago. However, given blood cancer's enduring prevalence, (one life every two hours), investment and emotional/practical support remain vital.

What else could I do with my time/money?

Uh, see a movie or eat a burger.

You talking me out of partaking?!

Uh... Inadvertently! What I mean is... Um. Okay, let me answer by twisting the words of Mick Dundee - when soliciting help from a punk gang to save Sue - GANG LEADER: "What's in it for us?" MICK: "Leroy tells me that your gang is the coolest gang in New York. Hmm, what did you do last night?" Okay, yeah, pretty atrocious effort - to make a fairly simple point. So in a nutshell: no, I'm not.

How do I get sponsors?

Two-way communication, honesty, and respect never go astray. Cornering a relative at BBQ, generally not as effective. I suggest heading here for some top tips.

How do I host an event?

Specific instructions are actually provided here.

Is there anything else going on?

Funny you should ask. 'Funky Hair Day' lands on Friday 11th March 2016. A day where students are free to conjure wacky hairdos for a gold coin donation. First 1,000 schools to sign up, receiving a free kit to help kids punkify.

Is there anything else I need to know?

Insinuating this article's lacking?!'re right. Anyway, if there is, a great resource is their FAQ.
