What an amazing place a good museum is! My kids and I recently went to the Melbourne Museum for the Mesopotamian exhibit. It was so informative and super fun. My kids did not even realise how much they were learning. They were too busy trying on Babylonian costumes, stacking Roman columns, and flannel graphing early Mesopotamian kids' games and activities.

We went back again in the same month. There is always enough to do there to keep it fresh. My friends and I had as much fun as the kids, colouring and checking out the books and exhibits. I read the epic of Gilgamesh in about 5 minutes. It was the kids' version. I love old literature.

I liked the Epic of Gilgamesh a lot better in the abridged version with lots of pictures. It was a literary feat at the time it was written, but there is a ton of repetition in the original. That's because of the long tradition of oral storytelling that preceded it. There were lots of other kids' books to browse in a little library-like spot in the exhibit. Most were directly related topics to early Mesapotamia.

Anyway the Melbourne Museum definitely had something for the whole group.

It was an eye-opening trip. I guess great museums usually are but especially when going with kids. It's amazing how eager the heart of a child is to learn and grow.

It inspires me to think how much I still have to learn and how that process is easier all the time with all the awesome opportunities at our feet. I guess we just have to remember to see them.
