The signage at the entrance to The Wired Owl Coffee Co in Sandgate warns, "Life's too short for bad coffee. Choose wisely." As wise as an owl perhaps? So, with this in mind, I walked in with a pretty high expectation of a well made and quality brew in this cool, suburban seaside cafe.

The Wired Owl is a boutique, specialty coffee house and favourite in Sandgate with a very indie feel and an obvious local following. With a little bit of research, I discovered that the name comes from the owners interest in owls, along with coffee addicts' tendency for being 'wired' on coffee.

The cafe has 3 seating areas: there's the warm, dark and moody indoor space with some owl infused art work; outside on the curbside; and a cute, triangular, picket fence-framed outdoor courtyard to the side. The shop corner is shaded by a large, mature and leafy tree watching over it at the less bustling end of Rainbow Street.

On a warm day, the courtyard was calling my name so I selected one of the heavy wooden tables and a square, crate inspired wooden stool under the umbrellas to await my order. The courtyard has a serving window which provides a sneaky view inside of the baristas busily creating their brews. A potted coffee plant, and hanging baskets finish the look along with coloured, lead light windows for the sunlight to filter through. Very sweet.

The Wired Owl serves coffee from Brisbane's own Wolff Coffee Roasters. I selected a chai latte ($4.00, as are most standard coffees) which arrived soon after I sat down and was delivered with an unexpected surprise - a chocolate freckle on the side of the saucer. Who can say no to chocolate, right? The chai itself didn't disappoint and was filled with a rich, cinammon flavour.

If you are looking for something more substantial than a chocolate freckle to have with your coffee, cakes and muffins sit beside the counter in the cold cabinet. Despite some sweet treats, the focus is firmly on the coffee. Wired Owl also has a selection of teas for the non coffee drinker.

My visit to the Wired Owl left me feeling a touch wiser because I had uncovered a new cafe for my list of favourites. A visit to the Wired Owl is made easier with street parking available in Rainbow Street and around the corner in Palm Avenue. Wired Owl offers a loyalty program for regular visitors and is open 7 days. You can also text through your order if you are running short on time. Sandgate is located 16kms from the CBD.
