Hidden among the fig trees of the Kensington UNSW campus is a quaint, unsuspecting white house. However, this is possibly one of Sydney's best kept secrets; oh so aptly named, "The Whitehouse."
The Whitehouse is a two story establishment, open to students and the general public alike. The bottom floor boasts indoor and outdoor seating, a small bar, cafe and a fantastic kitchen. Large gourmet pizzas are available from $5 to $10, as well as wraps, platters for sharing and sides available from lunchtime. For early risers there is a selection of fantastic cooked breakfast foods and drinks.
A narrow stairway hidden towards the back will take you through a mess student created artwork to a smaller, more intimate bar upstairs. The room is littered with antique couches, amazingly comfortable bar stools and a myriad of board games. There is refreshingly different music played each night, from hits of the 90's to music that even the hippest hipsters will find too obscure.
Both bars are very decently priced, however most regulars recommend forgoing traditional alcoholic beverages and sharing a bowl of Whitehouse punch. There are several different flavours available, the most popular being Captain's Blood. Sure, it may not sound that tasty, but it's a fantastic citrusy mix that has the strength of conventional drinks, but with a more palatable flavour. Plus, you get to drink it out of jars (how cool is that?), and a $25 bowl will easily be enough for 3 or 4 friends. There is also a selection of fantastic cocktails and non-alcoholic beverages (though the venue itself is 18).
