I have a friend who loves gardening but lives in an apartment, so she volunteers at a few different venues including the Herring Island Environmental Sculpture Park, and the other, The Well at St. Kilda Chapel , 12B Chapel Street, St Kilda. They run a meditation/mindfulness session fortnightly on a Friday from 11am to 12noon and today, Fri 15 Nov 2024, I was invited to attend, so I thought I'd check it out. On the Friday in between they have drawing classes that alternates with the meditation. Run by The Salvation Army , Chaplain Jim presided and took us on a mindfulness journey outdoors on the verandah as the usual spot inside was taken up with preparation for their upcoming Twilight Market.

I was immediately calmed when I entered this gorgeous idyllic garden at the back, filled with raised beds growing vegetables and herbs. The whole place has a wonderful ambience - the perfect place to feel relaxed and everyone was so nice and friendly. Run by Major Narelle, all you see has been her vision of wanting a home away from home where everyone feels welcome. I would say without hesitation, it's all come to fruition. Christianity-based, they endeavour to bring the love of Jesus to transform the community, one life at a time, and to make a difference. A vibrant life-giving hub is exactly what it is, where you can feel accepted and included. If you're going through a difficult time, The Well has a 'We Care' pack consisting of basic food and toiletries, plus a listening ear and practical help.

A place like this could not be, without the help of volunteers , and an expression of interest in volunteering is always welcomed. See the given link to find out more about volunteering. They're in need of gardeners, landscapers, carpenters, tradies, administration and general help to continue their good work. Lend a hand and experience community. The Well also runs regular programs as follows, every week. These are the current programs that could change over time.

  • Tuesday from 10.30am to 11.30am - Auslan Conversations, and everyone is welcome to discover and /or develop Auslan in sign.
  • Wednesday from 9am to 1pm - Upcycle 4 Good Workshops - A free activity that provides a safe and caring mateship environment. Lunch is included for participants.
  • Friday 11am to 12pm (run fortnightly) - De-stress at Mindfulness classes in a safe environment and connect with others. Nurture your soul.
  • Friday 11am to 12pm (run fortnightly and alternates with mindfulness classes as above) - Drawing
  • Sunday 11am to 1pm (every 3rd Sunday of the month) - Worship gathering.

  • Sunday Gathering 17 Nov 2024 at 11am

As you can see from the first image, the Sunday Gathering on 17 Nov is something special with special guests, conversation and song. If you can make it, come along and enjoy the very special guest and guest speaker, then there's lunch in the garden. If you'd like to attend, to help with catering, please let them know as soon as possible if you'll be attending, Text Narelle on 0408 991 334.

Twilight Market Sat 23 Nov 2024 from 4-8pm

A Market is next on the agenda at The Well. Their very first one in fact, and judging from today's activities, they're preparing hard for it. There'll be market stalls showcasing art, crafts, jewellery, giftware, gift hampers, baby hampers, neck and shoulder massages and a sausage sizzle, which is part of the fundraiser event. There'll be a couple of food trucks on the front lawn, and pizza and Devonshire tea and cakes on offer too. Vegetarian and gluten-free options are also available, and you'll be serenaded with live music.

Stony Tracks Indigenous Mural and Garden at 6pm on Sat 23 Nov 2024

On the same day as the market, The Well will be launching its Stony Tracks Indigenous Mural and Garden. This meaningful project is crafted with care by Clunie Walker and respected local Indigenous artist Les Stanley, as a tribute to our shared land and culture. Looks like market day is not one to be missed. Just be sure to carry some cash for those irresistible cash-only buys.

    Christmas at The Well

This Christmas the community is invited to celebrate the spirit of giving and togetherness at two events as follows. Especially if you're one of those special people who have been volunteering time and again all year and more at The Well. Again, please text Narelle to confirm your attendance on 0408 991 334 for catering purposes.

  • Fri 13 Dec 10am to 2pm - the final Friday lunch of 2024 - a festive day filled with delicious food, uplifting entertainment and the joy of being together.
  • Sun 15 Dec11am to 2.30pm - the last Sunday gathering of the year, a day of giving and receiving, and a time to reflect on the true meaning of Christmas. Please bring a $10 unwrapped gift for a fun 'Kris Kringle' exchange. Join in to make this Christmas gathering a cherished one for all.

  • If you are especially going through a tough patch, after my first visit today, I'd urge you to visit The Well and get to know the community. This is a place I would equate to ' a well to draw from' when you're in need, and you may well discover joy and belonging, and a whole bunch of really nice people. Be part of the community.
