A bomb has gone off in the train station at Inverness, followed by an electromagnetic pulse. You have been chosen to deliver a package that could be vital to the safety of millions of people. Since no trains, buses or cars are running, to get it there you will need to walk the length of the UK, staying clear of armed soldiers and terrorists and trusting no-one but your guide, Charlie.
If you're trying to be more active and do the ten thousand steps a day now recommended by health professionals it helps to have some incentive to walk just that little bit further each day. The Walk is a pedometer with a difference. Created by Six to Start, the creators of Zombies, Run!, the running game, in collaboration with the NHS, it's a fitness ap for people who want a less intense workout than running, but who still want to get active.
You, the player are codenamed "Walker" and must complete various missions by walking a given distance to unlock the next part of the story. The story is told by talented voice actors, who will be recognisable to people who have already played Zombies, Run!. Voices you associate with people you trust may not be so trustworthy here, which adds to the level of suspense. The story is a little slow paced to start with but picks up speed. It is full of twists and turns and double crosses to keep you guessing right to the end.
If you are a very active person, or like me, already do a lot of walking, you might not find The Walk challenging enough. I found that I could get through a mission in about half a day if I was out and about taking my children places, but I suppose its more to encourage people who would normally drive when going on short errands. Fortunately, the game can be adjusted to make missions shorter or longer depending on your personal fitness level. There are 65 missions, providing over 800 minutes of audio story.
The Walk is a fun way to get out and walking more each day, with an exciting story to help motivate and entertain you. It's available for iOS or Android. It's available on iTunes for around $3 or for $7.49 as part of the Fitness Games Superpack, together with Six To Start's other fitness games Zombies, Run! and Superhero Workout.
