An adorable corner cafe in Elwood Village , the recently reopened Turtle Cafe is a comfort food haven. With plenty of tempting vegetarian options alongside a handful of more meaty dishes, it is a local breakfast, brunch and lunch mecca in an exceptional location.



I ordered the turtle burger, which at $19 was steeply priced but delicious. Comprised of a beef patty with coleslaw, relish, cheese and a small amount of lettuce and onion on a white bread bun, it certainly wasn't among the healthiest options on the menu. The quality of the beef patty made it among the best burgers I've ever had - certainly better than your average burger franchise fare.



It arrived with a bowl of thickly cut chips, which were a good texture but unfortunately rendered flavourless by the lack of seasoning. On the upside, they arrived with an ample serving of aioli.



With generously overlapped breakfast and lunch hours, I was able to order from the lunch menu while my friend got a breakfast despite it being well into the afternoon. She ordered their eponymous turtle big breakfast, which included all the usual ingredients of a satisfying cafe breakfast. She was particularly impressed by the hash brown, which was decidedly different to your standard potato cake style hash brown. The meal was also set apart due to the inclusion of a cheese kransky rather than a beef sausage as is usual practise for cafe breakfasts.



The service was of mixed quality, with one of the waitresses being fairly rude, walking off without taking our entire order and taking the orders of people who had arrived after us first. However, one of the other waitresses was personable and fun enough to almost make up for it. We were also perplexed that our meals arrived at different times, with a ten minute gap from when my friend's meal arrived to when mine arrived.

Despite the service being less than optimal, I would definitely go there again. Not only was the food tasty, it was also of exceptional quality for cafe food.
