In 2011 The Tunnel made Australian film history as the country's first-ever crowd-funded feature film. The production team had the unique idea to sell each frame of the film for $1, on the understanding that it would be released all around the world including for free on BitTorrent. This caused quite a stir within the film industry, where BitTorrent was viewed as the enemy. Nevertheless, they stuck to their guns and the film reached an audience of 25 million people worldwide.

The Tunnel was an independent mockumentary-style horror movie, with segments of found footage, about a news anchor who headed into some disused railway tunnels under Sydney in order to investigate the disappearance of several homeless people. It was directed by Carlo Ledesma and written, produced and edited by Julian Harvey and Enzo Tedeschi. This documentary is partly a 'making of' film about The Tunnel, and partly about the controversy surrounding its release. Please be warned that if you have not yet seen The Tunnel, the documentary does contain some spoilers for it.

It was fun to watch the cast and crew having a good time on set during the 'making of' segments. The part where they managed to bluff their way into a real press conference with then prime minister Julia Gillard was especially impressive. The segments of the film about the crowdfunding model and the difficulties the filmmakers had with finding a distributor were fascinating. There are interviews with the actors in The Tunnel, including Luke Arnold (from Black Sails, Glitch and Preppers), as well as other filmmakers and industry professionals.

The Tunnel: The Other Side of Darkness is an interesting glimpse of this unusual chapter of Australian cinematic history. It will be streaming online as part of the Melbourne Documentary Film Festival .
