The Triffid is well known for its great alternative live music. The bar and venue is owned by John Collins, the former bassist of Powderfinger, which explains the great line-up of entertainment.

We decided to spend our Sunday afternoon relaxing on the new deck extension and listening to some live music. The place is located on Stratton Street in Newstead and the entrance wasn't what I was expecting. The décor is recycled industrial with cleverly reused shipping containers. The gigs are held in a renovated WW2 vintage aircraft hangar. There is a feature wall of graffiti with the names of bands and people. Do you know them all?

There is a great range of food options on the new Autumn menu at the Feedback Café. It could be described as dude food with a street edge. You could enjoy a falafel burger, Greek falafel salad, fried chicken wings, nachos, grilled chicken salad, or nacho fries.

We each found a stool at a spare table on the new deck. We enjoyed listening to the eclectic but multi-talented Kenta Hayashi. We sipped our beer and traditional Pimms while enjoying a generous cheese platter. The new deck has a great view overlooking the rest of the beer garden. It's the best spot in the house and also covered in case of rain.

A new music program has been released and Saturdays cater to the younger crowd, with launch of afternoon DJ 'NOW' sessions from 1pm to 7pm. You'll also approve of the ten dollar burgers and ten-dollar band name inspired cocktails.

There is free entry on Sunday with various roots music performances from 2pm. These are presented by Triple J's Sarah Howells. You may be tempted by different meats cooked on the outdoor barbeque grill, from Brazilian grill up, an Aussie lamb feast to Korean and Mexican meats (depending on the day you go). Add a carafe of Pimms or jug of beer and you are set for an enjoyable afternoon.

If you are thinking about visiting this venue then, you may like to visit The Triffid's website for upcoming gigs to find something to your taste. Book a table for your friends up on the new deck.

The Triffid is much more than the place to go for a few drinks before the main show next door.
