Here is your chance to see one of the most anticipated film releases of 2011, The Tree of Life, two weeks before it is released in Australian cinemas nationally.

Special advance screenings of The Tree of Life, directed by legendary filmmaker Terrence Malick, will take place at the Palace Brighton Bay ( bay street brighton vic&fb=1&gl=au&hnear=0x6ad646b5d2ba4df7:0x4045675218ccd90,Melbourne VIC&cid=0,0,16354176541699230085&ll=-37.904878,145.001957&spn=0.009092,0.021136&z=16&iwloc=A 294 Bay Street, Brighton ) on Thursday, June 16 and Palace Cinema Como , ( Toorak Rd %26 Chapel St, South Yarra&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Toorak Rd %26 Chapel St, South Yarra Victoria 3141&gl=au&z=16 Cnr Toorak Rd & Chapel St, South Yarra ) on Friday June 17th, 2011. The Tree of Life will be released in Australian cinemas from June 30th, 2011.

The Tree of Life was recently awarded the prestigious Palme d'Or at the 64th Cannes Film Festival, and stars Brad Pitt, Sean Penn and Jessica Chastain. The film was originally set to star the late Heath Ledger , who left the production in December 2007, and was replaced by Pitt.

The ambitious drama is Malick's fifth feature film, his previous feature film, The New World, was released in 2005 (you can read my review of The New World at Michael D's here ).

The theatrical release of The New World experienced several delays. Originally a 150 minute feature, it was scheduled to be released in November 2005, but was eventually heavily re-edited after initial screenings in December 2005.

Currently two versions of The New World exist, the re-edited 135 minute version and a 172-minute version, and while The Tree of Life, also suffered several delays whist in post-production (The Tree of Life was to screen at the 63rd Cannes Film Festival last year, but Malick stated the feature film " was not ready "), it appears there will be only one version of The Tree of Life - it currently clocks in at 138 minutes.

The reception at this year's Cannes première was generally positive , and of course the jury, headed by Robert De Niro, took a shine to the drama/sci-fi - awarding The Tree of Life the top honour - the Palme d'Or.

As the cast is headlined by Pitt and Penn (who previously starred in Malick's acclaimed war drama The Thin Red Line, back in 1998), The Tree of Life will most likely be viewed by a mainstream audience.

However being a Malick film, it is sure to divide audiences on release. Here is a sample of what the critics have had to say so far;

Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian proclaimed the feature film a "mad and magnificent film ... [and] visionary cinema on an unashamedly huge scale."

Peter Travers of Rolling Stone stated "Shot with a poet's eye, Malick's film is a groundbreaker, a personal vision that dares to reach for the stars."

Leonard Maltin offered a different point of view: "I found the shots of protozoa, flowing water, and the cosmos itself to be beautiful but— boring. ... you must know, going in, that you may or may not respond to the movie as a whole."

Kenneth Turan of the Los Angeles Times, also felt the same as Maltin; "... its enormous advantages notwithstanding, ends up a film that demands to be admired but cannot be easily embraced."

As for the plot of the feature, it is a family drama set in the 1950s, but it appears there is much more to this feature, if you are willing to embrace it; it is a commentary on love, life, family and faith.

Palace Cinemas are clearly excited to be presenting these special advance screenings, which are more of an event, rather than a traditional advance screening, as patrons will be offered a glass of Prosecco on arrival. To attend this anticipated event, it is worth booking your ticket via the Palace Cinema website.

Adult tickets are priced at $25, while Palace Movie Club Members pay the discounted fee of $20.
