I hardly ever venture down Grey Street in South Bank, but this week I did and discovered The Tree House Cafe; hidden in plain sight. Open since July, The Tree House is a welcome addition to the South Bank coffee scene.
Located opposite the Mantra Hotel, this espresso bar is the perfect place for a quick bite to eat and a cuppa. If coffee isn't your thing, they also serve smoothies, frappes, hot chocolate, chai latte, and tea. They are now licensed as well. The menu is limited to muffins, fruit toast, banana bread, and toasted sandwiches but the service is friendly and the setting is superb.
This two-story cafe has seating on the ground floor including a comfy lounge. But the 'tree house' upstairs, speckled with sunlight, is the place to be. I had a lovely latte and tasty, toasted tomato and cheese sandwich while enjoying the leafy outlook, beautiful breeze, and comings and goings on Grey Street.
I like the look of this place from the outside, but think it would be extra cute with a ladder going up to the balcony. I can only imagine how many oc health & safety rules that would probably break, but it would go well with the tree house theme.
