The GoTravel Wet or Dry Bag

The travel wet or dry bag, also known just as a travel dry bag, is highly useful travel gear for when your valuables get exposed to water and wet weather. For hiking, they can be really useful, protecting electrical gear when backpacks get exposed completely to wet weather and creeks. For surfing holidays, fishing trips, motorcycling, camping, and trips to the beach, the travel dry bag prevents rain damage to valuables and conceals items more. Basically, the travel dry bag and other waterproof travel bags best fit the purpose of adventurous travel. Therefore, I found I ought to buy a cheap yet effective version because my needs for a dry bag as a traveller and a writer were versatile yet not overly demanding.

One of the most popular and hence usefully cheap versions of this concept is by GoTravel . If one Google searches 'wet and dry bag' or 'wet or dry bag' then the GoTravel version features prominently. But Active Water Sports, Overboard , and Anaconda also sell this product in various forms, as does BCF . Ironically, I rarely see these accessories used, but I can recommend the GoTravel version, although for less significant use. It states on the GoTravel website not to immerse the bag in liquid; however, having used this bag for three years, I have seen how it protects in wet weather and how it is useful for peace of mind. Therefore, I find it difficult to replace compared to packing cubes . I often pack it to the top of a backpack and store a spare charger, phone, or other electrical equipment in it. Because my GoTravel wet or dry bag is five litres in capacity, I can store other items in it, such as tablets, if I know such items will be exposed to severe wet weather or a wet luggage trailer on shuttle buses or any other such spontaneous situation where the luggage will get more severe water exposure, if I can anticipate it.

Due to the need for high-quality bag materials and sealing mechanisms, the prices of travel dry bags are surprisingly wide-ranging. The GoTravel wet or dry bag in its earlier versions can still sell for as low as approximately ten Australian dollars online, but higher-end bags from other companies cost fifty dollars, with many different types and levels of wet-weather protection available within the ten to fifty dollar price range. I found, naturally, the range of prices was wider than for packing cubes, which aren't as dependent on waterproof fibres. Some packing cubes couldn't possibly be waterproof, as they functioned to allow some ventilation through the exterior of the cubes.

Photo Demonstration

The GoTravel version of the wet or dry bag seems potentially breakable and won't be useful if it breaks. However, the polyester can certainly withstand powerpoints, which are quite sharp compared to other electrical items. The main idea to getting value out of a GoTravel wet or dry bag is to roll it properly so air doesn't get into the inside of the bag. I have added some collages below to demonstrate this and show the buckle on the bag.

GoTravel also sells a laundry bag , which is more than twice the capacity of their wet or dry bags. In the old version, it is the same colour as the wet or dry bag. In a similar scenario to purchasing and using the wet or dry bag, the travel laundry bag is also subtly effective and thus so recommendable. I like how it seals up with an adjustable elastic drawstring at the top of the bag, and I love the clip-on, which clearly distinguishes its functionality from that of a sturdy shopping bag. I find that the way I can simply clip my laundry bag onto a clotheshorse has me really keen to promote such a product. However, as I store laundry in it, I won't demonstrate with a photo but have linked its featured page on the GoTravel website. I found with packing cubes, I wasn't convinced, but for wet or dry bags, I am convinced they are a useful indulgence in travel gear, while for the laundry bag, I am almost convinced, that they are almost universally better than a plastic shopping bag, except for the fact that recycling a shopping bag for laundry is better environmentally. Do note that if one has to travel to a classy hotel, packing with expensive brand shopping bags, yours or donated by a friend, can be as useful as packing cubes, but in a really recyclable way.

Overall, I think that using travel dry bags is underrated, but select carefully, as more heavy use if poorly selected can potentially risk getting valuables wet. They are one of the best travel gadgets one can indulge in, and the GoTravel version is useful yet an ideal introduction to the world of travel gadgets to see if they suit one's personal tastes. Despite recycling concerns, most travel gear is compact and is made of thin materials, so if they suit personal tastes, it is not going to be overly controversial just to enjoy such products. I can see that with the GoTravel wet or dry bag, the best usage tip is to eliminate air from the inside of the bag so sharp, metallic items like chargers won't pierce the strong but thin layer of polyester in the bag itself. Thus, the GoTravel wet or dry bag offered me peace of mind and was ideal for storing at the top of my hand luggage.
