Cocktails and Carriages – Top Hat Optional
Many a night has disappeared into The Toff in Town's dark crevices. Located on the second floor of Curtin House, Swanston Street, The Toff is a fantastic Melbourne hideaway.
Occasionally overshadowed by its flashier cousin, Cookie, The Toff in Town nevertheless enjoys a strong cult following. A respectable Thai dinner with friends can tilt dangerously into a late-night dancing and drinking fest. Cosied up in one of the booths, the hours sure do slip away.
These booths are not your average bar hangouts. Inspired by 18th Century train carriages, they have private folding doors, adorable checked tablecloths and, most importantly, a service button. That's right, one magic push gets prompt table service. It's like home delivery, Toff-style – all from the safety of your own personal carriage. Horses not included.
The Toff in Town is part of the group that brought us Magic Mountain, Boney and Cookie. So we know what to expect from the menu - beautiful Thai-inspired dishes that match with world-class cocktails. Share plates mean there's a little taste of everything, from spicy prawns to tart and tangy salads.
Favourite cocktails include the Cuban Remedy, a rich and spicy cocktail with a fresh spritz of lime. When a top hat is absolutely necessary, try The History of Guangdong – it involves lychees and Camembert cheese. So fancy!
The Toff in Town is also known as a boutique performance space. Cabaret, live music, dance, comedy and theatre all feature on the line up that includes international and local acts. As the night progresses, DJs spin sexy sounds into the wee hours.
Toff staff are top staff. Lame jokes aside, with dinner guests, group bookings and those infamous service bells dinging, it can be a madhouse in there. It's always impressive to see experienced, friendly bartenders take everything in their stride.
Book a booth, order a few sharing plates and a couple of cocktails and see where The Toff takes you. Your carriage awaits!
