The Tea Trolley Tea Room

Don't you just love it when, by sheer accident, you discover something new in your own neighbourhood?
I stumbled across an interesting place when I visited a cluster of suburban shops in Wellington Street, Ormiston. It is just an ordinary 1970's shopping centre with bakery, grocer, hairdresser, couple of restaurants, and real estate agent; serviceable but nothing flash. Indeed, the centre as a whole could do with a visit from the team from
Better Homes and Gardens.
A flash of colour caught my eye as I ran in for the newspaper, and being a stickybeak I had no choice but to investigate the source of the pastel pinks and blues - an oasis in the desert if you like.
The Tea Trolley is an intimate village-inspired tea room, decorated in lovely, soft pastels that invite you to come in and seek shelter. It doesn't matter that there are no scenic views as once the curtains are drawn you feel like you have been drawn into a tea party with Alice in Wonderland.
The vintage fine china adds to the feel of this cafe, which specialises in high teas and catering for social functions, such as bridal parties and baby showers. The Tea Trolley even caters for children's tea parties. How lovely for a little girls birthday would this be!
Don't get me wrong: you can pop in for a cup of tea or coffee at any time. Raisin toast, cupcakes, and finger sandwiches are on the menu as is my favourite, the Devonshire Tea.
The Tea Trolley's focal point is the delivery of high teas, although for these you must book at least two hours in advance. Of course, tiered plates are used for serving the treats which provides that authentic high tea ambiance and adds that touch of luxury.
There are an assortment of high teas available: Petite, Traditional High, as well as a Decadent High Tea. I'm putting my hand up for this one!
Gluten free and vegetarian menus are available with 24 hours notice.
The Tea Trolley is located at 116 Wellington Street, Ormiston, and there is plentiful off-street parking within the shopping precinct. Bookings and enquiries can be made on
0477 330 542. Opening hours are Wednesday through to Sunday, 9am to 3pm.
See. It pays to keep your eyes open, even when you run in for a paper in your dressing gown.
