A remake on a 70's UK TV show
Keeping up with the year of sequels the UK has joined in the Hollywood movement in revamping old stories, making sequels or turning books into movies to get the big buck in. But here I don't think they did a good job. Then again, it was a very 'guy' movie: Action, sex, basic storyline; maybe I am just thinking like a chick.
The Sweeney is an action film based on the 70's UK TV show of the same name. A group of Flying Squad officers who call themselves The Sweeney are a branch of the Specialist Crime & Operations section, within London's Metropolitan Police Service. The film follows one case in particular that is filled with twists and turns, betrayal, loss and corruption.
It opens up with the Sweeney making a bust and instead of the Hollywood style of cops running around with guns, they take on the more underground UK vibe of chasing the bad guys with baseball bats and beating them with it. It was from this point that I realised what type of film I would be watching: A (corrupt) cop action film that is pretty much like all the other cop action films.
Some not so traditional methods of interrogation used by The Sweeney.
Now do not think I am bagging this film and saying that you will not like it (okay, maybe I am a little), Because if you like the kind of films where you just sit back, relax and watch people beat up other people and not have to worry that you may have missed something in the plot line, then this film is your type indeed.
Personally I like my action films with a little more depth in it. I found myself tuning out of this film quite a lot. I am sure there are many people out there who love this style of film, but unfortunately for the producers, I am not one of them.
But don't take my word for it, go along and have a look for yourself. Score: 4/10
