A joyous musical with vibrant dancing from jitterbug to ballroom are the highlights in the new adaption of
on stage now in Brisbane.
It is a love story of its time with returning soldiers from WWII finding Brisbane and Australia hasn't changed as much as some thought. This is particularly so with Aboriginal serviceman Frank Doyle (played by Marcus Corowa), barred from entry into dance clubs because of a 'No Aboriginal' policy. Frank is not deterred and creates the Sunshine Club, where all can come together and dance as one.
It's a joyous romp and jive through the dance crazes of the 40s and 50s with plenty of humour that makes this the ultimate feel-good musical The issues of assimilation are addressed but is above this with everyone mixing. It is not long before love beckons between Frank and singer Rose (Irena Lysiuk of Voice and Opera Queensland fame), who is set for London. The tensions of the time add a testing time for this relationship to work.
Director Wesley Enoch has used his renowned talents in this revival from its 1999 original with a talented and energetic cast. Aunty Faith gives a very warm and relatable performance. After all, doesn't everyone have an 'Aunty Faith'?
