The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck – Book Review

It's time to cast aside those mindful colouring books, there's a new genre of self-help books about not giving a hoot. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck by Mark Manson is an enlightening guide to living a good life with unconventional personal development advice.

Before I read this book, I had finished 'The Life Changing Magic of Not Giving a Fk' by Sarah Night. It was filled with dark humour and laugh out loud moments. This book has practical steps and exercises to work out what is important to you (not society) and as a result where to focus your fks on. It's a good book to read after Mark's (if this a philosophy you want to pursue).

Mark Mason's book is like a breath of fresh air in giving practical and realistic life advice. It's message is needed in a world where we are obsessed with our mobile phones, how many likes we get on social media and our interest in the Kardasians.

Mark asks us if we are chasing the right goals or are we blinding following other people's opinions? For many people this will be a wake-up call to start questioning the direction of their life.

Mark has backed up his approach by a realistic life philosophy which can only be achieved by self-reflection and openness.

I enjoyed the story about Dave Mustaine of Megadeath formally Metallica, as compared to Pete Best formally of the Beatles. Both men were kicked out of widely 'successful' bands, but one of them measured his life by what could have been and the other choose to see his misfortune as a blessing.

Mark asks us if have good vales which are reality based, socially constructive and immediate and controllable. He challenges us to take responsibility for what occurs in our life.

The rest of the books talks about a taking responsibility for everything that occurs in your life, acknowledge your own ignorance and the cultivation of constant doubt in your beliefs, the willingness to discover your own flaws and mistakes so that they may be improved upon, the ability to say and hear no with honesty and becoming comfortable with our own mortality.

I thoroughly enjoyed ' The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck ' by Mark Manson and if you are done with people pleasing or chasing the great Australian dream then perhaps it's time to reassess your life.

The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck is available in paperback from your favourite bookseller.
