After her husband's death, Amanda buys a small inn in the middle of nowhere, and moves their with her 17-year-old daughter, Karli. Before they are even ready for open for business, a man turns up looking for a room for the night. Unfortunately for Amanda and Karli, their guest has not come alone. The Stranger (2022) is an independent British horror movie, not to be confused with the Australian crime thriller of the same name, nor the 2008 American horror film The Strangers. It's made on a small budget and mainly set in one location, giving it a claustrophobic feel. Jennifer K. Preston (from Hosts) plays the mother, Amanda, and the other actors are newcomers.

I was expecting this film to be a fairly straightforward home invasion story but it was something much stranger than that, more like a creepy fairy tale. It definitely had me on the edge of my seat about halfway through, even muttering to the characters on screen (eg. "No, don't go in there- Don't open that- Oh..never mind). The little people in the screen never listen. There is some blood and gore and supernatural horror, but mainly it's the quiet moments that are the scariest.

The Stranger%% is a tense, indie horror film with a dark fairytale vibe, that might make you want to stay away from your windows.
