How much do you really know about Brissie?
Do you live here and are you still curious about this lovely city? Are you visiting and want to know more? Do you have relies coming over soon who need to be kept entertained? Well, I have the answer to all of your needs in a really entertaining walking tour which is currently being run from Brisbane Powerhouse called "The Story of Brisbane."

Therese and Tim
Therese and Tim

It is on every Wednesday at 10am from March to August of this year and it is so worth attending. Run by a lovely duo called Therese Collie and Tim Mullooly, they take you around the awesome Powerhouse with stories of when it was built, how it blew smoke over Brisbane, when eventually it stopped operating and lay derelict, until it was converted into the Powerhouse of culture, music and comedy that it is today and which we all know and love.

The stories Therese and Tim relate are not just about the Powerhouse but they are about the city of Brisbane and its history, its aboriginal inhabitants and the various indigenous names which we still use today to talk about parts and places in the city. It is about the importance of the river known as Maiwar and the way it flows into Moreton Bay, Quandamooka.

It is about how the city's fate changed in the second world war when it became a defensive bastion against the Japanese invaders, the Yanks arriving with General MacArthur, the city's expansion and Expo 88 and the way it has inspired countless local writers, from David Malouf to Kath Walker, and Thea Astley as well as song writers to describe it in many ways. Some were fed up of its country town set up,some were admiring of its wildlife, while others just thought it was a great fun place to live.Throughout we have good ol' Ozzie humour thrown in.

There were poems expertly recited, not a word missed, extracts and role plays from books and characters in Brisbane life, ballads and songs involving the city, while walking along the river and taking in some of the special places of the Powerhouse.
