I don't like going to The Stag Hotel on a night out in town – it just isn't my scene – but whenever the opportunity arises to eat there count me in. I also don't mind the place for a quiet drink or two with a group of friends. When it comes to eating there however, not being the most meat-loving of people, I don't opt for a big hunk of meat on my plate but instead go for the steak sandwich. Now The Stag Hotel's steak sandwiches aren't plain old steak sandwiches – they are to die for – and this is coming from someone who, as I said already, isn't really all that carnivorous. They'll set you back around $20, however I'd consider it $20 well spent.

The 'powers-that-be' at The Stag claim to be serious about meat and the menu clearly backs them up there. Prices vary for different items but the meat goes all the way up to 1.5kg in size and that'll cost you around $83.

has a lovely, elegant formal-dining area if you are making a day or night of it with a nice meal, but as we were just out for a quick lunch we sat in the bar area where the atmosphere is a bit more casual. In summer-time there's nothing better than making use of the tables outside in the sun, with a cool drink and a large plate of food in front of you, but with these chilly days we've been having we opted to sit inside. After ordering at the bar, you need to grab yourself some cutlery. This includes a decent knife too, something I appreciate, as there's nothing worse at a restaurant than when they give you a butter knife to slice through a mammoth chunk of food.

The steak sandwich is served on grilled lepinja bread. There's melted cheese and tomato sauce on the base topped with onions that are caramelised to perfection, next sits the tender steak (although mine was slightly tougher than usual today), grilled bacon and egg, topped with lettuce, roma tomatoes and mayo. The additions to the sandwich besides the steak are so good that I think I'd still find myself ordering it off a menu even without the steak.

It comes served with an enormous pile of crunchy chips usually with a smattering of sea salt and rosemary on top giving them a lift from typical pub chips. Today there was no rosemary though, which was slightly disappointing. But, even when the sandwich isn't quite at its best it's still bloody good. It's a lot of food too, so if you only have a small appetite maybe see if someone else isn't feeling all that hungry and you could share. Otherwise, you may end up doing what I did today – slowly dissecting it and eating the most important bits, and leaving a bit of the bread on the plate.

Today, I just washed my delicious meal down with water but The Stag has a good selection of beers including James Squire and Little Creatures. They also have Bulmers available in Jugs for the cider drinkers out there. There's also a good wine selection and spirits available. I look forward to my next Stag Steak Sandwich, and I'm sure it won't be my last, although if I'm around in town on a Monday, maybe I could give a Juicy Lucy Burger a go. They're available for a limited time only.
