Released in 1965 by 20th Century Fox,
The Sound of Music was a landmark movie starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer. The film was an adaptation of the 1959 Broadway musical by Rodgers and Hammerstein and has been reprised around the world. Decades on, the musical about the von Trapp family continues to evoke emotion and is currently playing at the Regent Theatre in Melbourne until 31 July.
Set in Austria during World War II, the story centres on the lives of novice/governess Maria Rainer (Amy Lehpamer) and the von Trapp family with Captain Georg von Trapp (Cameron Daddo) at the helm. Delivering an alluring performance as the newly appointed governess, Lehpamer won the audience over effortlessly with
The Sound of Music and
My Favourite Things. Although the chemistry between Lehpamer and Daddo feels natural, it's Daddo's performance as the commanding Captain that feels forced.
From the first moment the von Trapp children came on stage, they were highly engaging and their performance of
Do- Re- Mi and
So Long Farewell was magical. It was clear that the youngest members of
The Sound of Music were comfortable in their roles as the energy levels raised every time they performed together.
Marina Prior captured the essence of Baroness Schraeder and Mother Abbess (Jacqueline Dark) radiated throughout the theatre with her performance of
Climb Ev'ry Mountain. The ensemble added warmth to the story and the remarkable band, led by Robert Russell Bennett, was flawless. Special mention goes out to Robert Jones for the incredible set design. The combined efforts by the company have captured the allure of its silver screen counterpart.
In the final act the Nazi insignia banners came down as soldiers stood on guard around the theatre making for a hauntingly beautiful scene as the family performed the much-awaited
Edelweiss. It was a highly emotionally charged scene and one that will stay etched in your memory for years to come.
