A new Sofitel opened in Singapore late May, but this hotel is different. They warn you to 'expect the unexpected' when you walk through the door of the heritage building, but little prepares you for the shift from the traditional colonial Singapore exterior to the fabulous design focused interior. Karl Lagarfeld features heavily in the Isabelle Miaja designed interior, and I found each day new details would catch my eye.

Located near Raffles Place, the location is perfect for business or pleasure, and with Lau Pa Sat closing off the street at the side of the hotel every Friday and Saturday night, it's easy to grab a festive satay if arriving in the evening, rather than let a moment of your holiday go to waste. The hotel is a two minute walk from Chinatown and Club Street, so a great location for those that want to shop or party.

We were lucky enough to get upgraded to a suite, so we had one of the rooms with a private balcony. Our room was spacious, with a huge bathroom. The level of thoughtful detail in the rooms is exceptional. There are hairbrushes, facial cleanser, perfume and hair elastics in the bathroom, complimentary snacks and nespresso machine for coffee.

The room itself offered a treasure trove of design, from the funky map of Singapore that reflected on the roof from the mirrored coffee table to the cute Asian baboushka dolls in the mini bar.

Breakfast included champagne, for those inclined and a range of tasty spiced fruit pots and breads, as well as the normal hotel breakfast fare of made to order omelettes and eggs, and hot and cold offerings.

The pool is a gold tiled lap pool with a clear end that juts out over the street below. The pool area doubles as a night time bar, and as we were there for the Grand Prix, it held a post race party each night (and pre-race afternoon pool party on the Sunday).

A truly modern hotel, Sofitel is raising the stakes in Singapore. So Sofitel, So Singapore.
