The Cafe that is Oh SO SMUG but with good reason

Curiosity often kills this cat...actually sometimes it awards it with a pretty fantastic breakfast.

I needed to know why this café was flapping its superiority flag in the wind. I mean you have got to think a lot of yourself to name your café The Smug Fig.

Smugness has to be earned. Smugness has to be based on reality otherwise its not cool to be Smug.

So I took one for the team and made my way out to East Brisbane to check out this café.

First of all, the excitement level of discovering that this admittedly cool café shares a roof with a Nursery, Clothing Store, Florist and Antiques store was high.

The other discovery was that there was no real air of smugness about the place. (Side note: How many times do you think I can use the word smug in one article?)

The only time I saw it was when the food was delivered by a smiling and yeah SMUG (7 times so far but who is counting?) face that said 'Oh yeah, you will be back for more'.

To be clear no one actually said those words, the staff were very polite but I IMAGINE that the smile on presentation of our order was SMUG based.

The café itself is a wonderfully spacious place with high ceilings, wooden decks and even a play area for the kids.

You are also surrounded by wall art and beautiful plant terrariums. They have created a very relaxed environment for families, couples and friends.

The idea is that you help yourself to the menus that hang on the wall and you make your way to, what I think, is a lovely use of a shipping container to place your order.

I'd like to send my compliments to the chef because breakfast was quite honestly divine.

I particularly enjoyed The Fig Brekkie (Picture below). It consisted of free range eggs, bacon, chorizo, balsamic tomato, (You're salivating aren't you? Wait there is more...) thyme & garlic mushroom and house made potato hash on multigrain sourdough.

The potato hash was so good that I talked about it for two days straight. It may have even featured in my dreams that night but I can't confirm that because... sadly I don't remember.

The menu presents other delights such as Banana Bread caramelised pears and mascarpone. Avocado smash and The Smug Benny, which to be fair should be smug because any meal that can keep me quiet for more than five minutes has got to win something.

Brie and double smoked ham omelette

An honourable mention has to go to the Brie and double smoked ham omelette (Pictured below) with shallots, house made tomato relish on sourdough.

They serve Two Seasons coffee, which I enjoyed, along with the usual café offerings of teas, hot chocolate and cold beverages.

The café is welcoming and spacious, service is good and the food is not only well presented but they are generous in size and taste great.

Place it on your Must Visit List, you won't be disappointed.

Also tell them I sent you, they will have no idea who I am and It will be fun to watch them try to solve the mystery. Fun for me that is.
