The smallest gig is about as indie as music gets. My first smallest gig experience was at a house in Rose Bay, tucked away in a small cul-de-sac. We walked up the front steps, lined with candles to the small table where 'ticketing' took place. We were informed that a $10 donation for the artists was suggested but anything we could manage would be fine, I gave $8.60.

From here we were directed around the side of the house, as the corridor was too crammed to get through, and into the back door. Outside, smokers and generally tall, outside sort of people were peering in through the kitchen windows at the living room concert.

About 100 people with plastic cups and paper bagged long-necks were spread over the floor and scarce furniture, between 3 open plan rooms, the smallest of these housing the musicians.

The event organisers make use of who ever volunteers their house and come by to pretty it up beforehand. A beautiful spread of Chinese lanterns, candles and owl sculptures adorned what was termed a "free and supportive space". Pillows and mini-picnics took place all over the floor and backyard as the music played.

It starts at 4 and finishes around 8 for neighbourhood respect. On the night I went 4 bands played: Aveberee, Jackson Dyer, Little Napier and Spooky Land; Each going for around half an hour. Between the third and fourth act we were all treated to bread a soup for a gold coin donation, a not only tasty but communal activity where you can ask the names of the people your leaning on through the show.

The sounds of the 'The Winter Ball' all possessed a reflective dream-like quality. Shoulders swayed, knees tucked into chests slumped to the floor and onto their neighbours, eyes lost focus; All in all a really warming and therapeutic experience to be a part of. A great thing for anyone to attend on a Sunday night and move serenely into the new week.

The Facebook Group provides dates, times and locations for future Smallest gigs. The organisers are really keen for participation in any way possible so don't hesitate to contact them about anything you might like to contribute or help out with.
