Under the Skin
How many times have you driven north, past the Caloundra turn off, and seen the huge skins on display along the fence on the left? How often have you said, "I must visit that place one day"? And then one day you do. When you sight the signs or the skins on the fence line turn left and follow on to The Skin Thing.
On a trip north to Carters Ridge, I did stop at The Skin Thing, and discovered a world of skins that was quite remarkable. Apart from the huge animal skins having over the fence, each day put on display by a staff member – weather permitting.
Inside the building, it is packed to the rafters of the skin and furs of a range of animals. The selection is quite amazing! They are piled high in the centre of the store. On the side walls, there are many truly Australian products including Ugg boots and Akubra hats. There is also a range of coats.
There are so many items created with the skins, from rugs to mats, to seat covers and more.
Many of the cow hides are imported from Brazil, which has very high quality hides to use as rugs. There is more information about these products at the website here. Some of these cow hides have printed patterns on them.
The Skin Thing is open 7 days a week all year round, and the staff are familiar with people explaining how they have passed many times and kept saying, "One day I must go to The Skin Thing." I wasn't the first and won't be the last, but I did find it a fascinating experience.
If you are not able to visit they have a great Online store on their website. Check it out here.
