German astronaut, Paula, spends three months on the International Space Station as part of a research team funded by a billionaire philanthropist. Paula's husband, Sven, and young daughter, Charlie, eagerly wait for her return, but when she lands Paula is acting strangely. She is due to fly back to Germany with her fellow astronaut, Hadi, but the plane vanishes mid-flight, leaving hundreds of people at the airport terrified and bewildered. In the days that follow Sven and Charlie learn that Paula made an unexpected discovery while aboard the ISS, one that someone might be willing to kill to keep secret.
The Signal is a tense German sci-fi thriller directed by Sebastian Hilger. It stars Peri Baumeister (from Blood Red Sky ) as Paula. Yuna Bennett (from Dear Thomas) plays young Charlie, and Florian David Fitz (from 100 Things) is Sven.
This series is visually enticing, taking the viewer from Paula's cosy treehouse-like family home in the picturesque countryside to the cluttered confines of the ISS, the vastness of space, and a seemingly equally vast desert on Earth.
I'll try not to say too much about the plot to avoid spoilers, but it was exciting and suspenseful, with twists and turns along the way. It reminded me a little of another sci-fi series, Three Body Problem. The Signal is also very moving and emotional, especially in the first episode when the news first breaks that the plane is gone, and Sven is trying to shelter Charlie from the tragedy while still trying to process things himself. It's hard to watch at times, but hang in there, because the ending is worth it.
The Signal is an exciting sci-fi thriller which will appeal to sci-fi fans who are looking for something a little more uplifting than Three Body Problem. It is a limited series with just four episodes and is currently streaming on Netflix in Australia.
