A place to honour the dead and provide solace to the grieving relatives, the memorial trees serve as absent graves. By the 1920s the Domain had stands of oak, elm and pine and mirrored the sweeping lawns and carriageways of the Royal Botanic Gardens next door. Planted by Guilfoyle and Mueller, the Botanic Gardens Committee knew their existence kept alive the link to Melbourne's past and enhanced the 'people's garden'.
