Have you ever watched the TV show the Amazing Race and thought, "Wouldn't it be great to be part of it?"

Well now you can be part of an amazing race that is being run in the Sutherland Shire on Saturday the 21st March 2015. The Shire Amazing Race is a not-for-profit event and their main aim is to raise funds for the AMAZING organisation – Enough Is Enough.

The Shire Amazing Race is the ultimate suburban adventure race set in the Sutherland Shire and is based on the Amazing Race TV series. From what I have read is that this action-packed pursuit will excite, challenge and inspire community spirit, whilst promoting fitness, fun and friendship, while at the same time help to raise funds for the charity Enough Is Enough.

This inaugural event will start and finish at Gunnamatta Pavilion, Gunnamatta Bay, Cronulla. It is not like running a marathon (which I have never done). It is a race where a team of two will race against the clock and other teams, deciphering clues and puzzles as well as a variety of fun and challenging activities.

Competitors can only travel by foot or public transport - this is a pedestrian race. You are not permitted to use any private transportation at any time during the race, but you are allowed to use public transport at your own cost. You may be required to provide evidence so please retain all tickets. No taxis, private vehicles, etc. are allowed.

It also means that you can't use bikes, roller-skates, rollerblades and skateboards. You must obey all the road rules and use footpaths, pedestrian crossings and pedestrian lights. No jay walking is allowed. So I would suggest that you read up on the road rules as to jay walking. You must stay off all private property at all times and you cannot sabotage another team's race.

You are allowed to use the Internet to help them solve clues. This may include having a friend at home on standby to do a quick search for you. Electronic devices such as smart phones or GPS are permitted and last, but by no means the least you must cross the finish line by 3pm on Saturday, 21 March 2015 to record your finishing time.

The event will be made up of different stages including the Collect, Check and Challenge stages. To get you on your way you will receive a clue sheet at the start of the race and you and your team mate will have to put your heads together to figure out your team's best race strategy. From there you will be on your way chasing the challenges and activities around the greater Cronulla area where you will be led by clues to various locations where you will experience a number of physical challenges, mental challenges and opportunities to explore Cronulla.

The main aim of the game is to get the required amount of points in the least amount of time. Different challenges will attract a different number of points depending on how challenging they are. It will be up to you and your team mate as to how best you feel you can achieve this – YOU choose your own adventure.

Enough is Enough was formed in 1994 by Ken Marslew following the tragic and violent murder of his son, university student Michael. From this tragic beginning, the seeds of hope were planted in the organization's mission to reform society's attitudes to violence through education and research.

Enough is Enough offers a comprehensive range of age and situation appropriate programs, seminars, and support services that focus on reducing the level of violence and its impact on society by offering practical strategies to deal with challenges, encouraging personal responsibility, building resilience and developing 'outside the square' thinking.

The organisers of The Shire Amazing Race have limited it to 500 teams of 2. Registration has started on the 2nd of December 2014 you will need to start and think whether you are going to put a team together and enter.

Here are some of the conditions;

You must be 12 years old or more, as long as you are accompanied by someone who is 18 years old or over.
The cost per team will be $90 per person if paid between December and February and any entry paid after that and before the last registration date of the 15th of March 2014 will be $100 per person.


•A race t-shirt and bib for each team member.
•Clue sheet.
•Map of the area.
•Local bus timetable.
•All equipment and props for all activities.
•A chance to experience amazing challenges that will give you the chance to do things you never dreamt you would do.
•Free water stations are set up at various challenge points throughout the race.
Those teams that reach the finish line before 3pm on Saturday the 21st of March will receive:
•A showbag full of goodies from the supporters, sponsors and partners.
•A certificate of completion.
•Team photo on the finish line.
•Prizes and trophies for the winning teams for both the place getters and also the top fundraisers.
•A sausage sizzle and lots more.


Volunteering is a great way to get involved in this local event, you may wish to gain some work experience, want to enjoy the race from a different perspective, or just want to help out and support the event and our partners.

There are a number of opportunities including but are not limited to:

•Helping and running some of the fun and exciting challenges
•Assisting with registrations at the start of the event
•Helping to take photos at some of the challenges
•Helping with the formalities at the finish of the event

All volunteers will receive:

•A sausage sizzle lunch at the end of the event

The Shire Amazing Race will be held rain, hail or shine. However the event may be postponed if there is a natural disaster, the sky falls in, there is a tsunami or there is another situation deemed dangerous by the Event Directors. Should this happen, where possible, the event will be rescheduled and if so no refunds will be issued. However should the event be completely cancelled all registration fees will be reimbursed.


TAFE NSW has come onboard as their Primary Partner. This is a unique partnership as students from Loftus TAFE they will be working hand in hand with the organizers to help come up with ideas for the event.

Over a 9 week period of their studies at the Loftus TAFE Campus students who are studying event management have done a lot of brain storming and have come up with a number of brilliant ideas. Many of these ideas have been incorporated into the race.
