Out and about recently, we spotted a great little area near the Mandurah Estuary Bridge. We are always on the lookout for new places we can take our dog and the kids and this one was screaming "come on down." So we did.

I will save you a lot of upside down maps, tense silent moments and a few grey hairs by explaining how you get to this spot and don't end up where we did (rolling eyes and sighing). So... you need to stay on Mandurah Road heading West. Go over the Mandurah Estuary Bridge and then take the Old Coast Road on the right, then the first right onto Leisure Way, which turns into Egret Point. Follow to the end and go under the bridge and you will see the dirt tracks right in front of you.

At the entrance is a large shaded area to get your boat ready and/or if you like set up a picnic. We took a drive further along and found there were quite a few private areas that are just as nice, but more secluded.

It's not crystal clear water, pure white sand or rolling green pastures, but what it does offer is a solid place to launch your tinny, a beautiful view of the Estuary with a few shady spots to set up for the day, and a safe, shallow place for the kids to swim. Note there are no amenities, BBQs or fresh water, but there is a shopping centre on Mandurah Road after the turnoff to Old Coast Road (don't turn off Mandurah Road), where you can treat yourself to lunch, or bring back some goodies to enjoy on the banks of the Estuary.

I'm not sure what this place is called so I've tagged it The Secret Spot. It's great to take your dog for a walk, do some fishing, throw in a crab pot, have a go 4WDing on solid but rutted ground or just sit back with a cold ale and watch the torrent of boats, houseboats and kayaker's mosey on past.

Several kids had remote control cars and were making use of the hard flat spots under the trees, while a mini remote control power boat skittled around in the water. It seems like a place to do... well... whatever "floats your boat", so to speak.

The water was quite muddy. I'm from QLD, I know about canals, and murky water and things that go bump in the night... I'm not familiar with the waterways of WA or what lives in them, so I was quite happy to hang in the shallows on the shore with the kids and enjoy the small waves from the boats' wash.

The Secret Spot is tucked away from the main thoroughfare and was great to chill out for a few hours. If it's not your cup of tea, there is a grassy park heading back East over the Mandurah Estuary Bridge on Waterside Drive with a kids playground, BBQs and walk paths. Could be an alternative place to check out. We noted people fishing and swimming on this side of the Estuary too.

Roughly an hour's drive South of Perth, Mandurah is well worth a visit. There are many hidden treasures this place has to offer, we're doing our best to find them, and I'm sure there's many waiting to be discovered by you. You can find out more by visiting The City of Mandurah website . Happy Travels.
