If you really loved James Thurber's very brief short story about Walter Mitty, you will either be offended by this film, or pleased that it is used as a jumping-off ground for a new creation.
Mitty is a negative processor for Life magazine, which is becoming on-line only, and shedding staff, including Mitty.
Ben Stlller takes the introverted dreamer, noted for disappearing into his own dream world, and sends him on a real voyage of adventure, in search of an apparently missing photograph essential for the last print edition.
He encounters erupting volcanoes, angry seas, and the opportunity to demonstrate his world-class skate-boarding prowess. Not to mention gaining valuable material for his eHarmony profile, which he may not need, as his new found confidence may well spark a long desired romance.
Yes, it's quirky, improbable and engaging – rather like that original short story.
