You may think that ice cream stores are much of a muchness, but this one has got a special something about it. Something kind of indefinable. And this is why it's been one of the most popular ice cream destinations in the state, and indeed the country, for almost 3 decades.

Queenscliffe is a small historic coastal town on the Bellarine Peninsula, about 30 minutes drive east of Geelong and roughly an hour and a half from Melbourne, and a very popular tourist destination.

Whether it's in the friendly and attentive service, or simply in the way the ice cream seems to taste as you walk around such a beautiful town, this shop is all charm. Maybe the answer is indeed partly in the setting. Queenscliffe is undeniably beautiful, and has been described as a 'lickin' and walkin' town'. That is, the best thing to do there is buy an ice cream and enjoy it whilst walking around, enjoying the sights and sounds of this seductive little hamlet, such as the town's 3 museums, the classic old Queenscliff Hotel or simply admiring the Spirit of Tasmania as it passes through the treacherous Port Phillip Heads, on its way to Devonport.

The shop itself offers a sumptuous array of frozen delights, in fact its flavour count is now up towards the 50 mark. From the traditional chocolate, strawberry and vanilla flavours, to more exotic fare such as Pecan Caramel, Panacotta and Baileys & Scorched Almond. Famed TV chef Gabriel Gate is often to be spotted in shop enjoying his favourite flavour - Hazelnut Praline. All served in your choice of cones, from your simple everyday garden variety ice cream cone, to magnificent waffles hand-dipped in chocolate and all manner of other sweet delights.

Along with the ice cream, you also have a selection of fruit sorbets and gelatos. In fact, the latter is made by Martino Piccolo, and his 'Art of Gelato', who has represented Australia with his delicious artisan made gelato, in various gastronomic awards the world over. The parlour also makes milkshakes and amazing thickshakes, and other cold drinks are available.

The owners are proud to say that all of the products are made with quality, Australian made ingredients - this shop is an Aussie icon.

Beyond the Queenscliffe township, you can catch a ferry to Sorrento on the Mornington Peninsula, take a quick drive to Point Lonsdale to see the lighthouse, or a little further to Barwon Heads and Torquay for ocean view golf courses, boutique shopping, magnificent beaches and surfing, and from there you can travel the Great Ocean Road, one of the world's great drives.

Geelong and surrounds is a fantastic area, and its residents are currently celebrating yet another Premiership victory for its football club, so it's a very happy place at the moment too. But it's even better experienced with a delicious delight from the Scandinavian in Queenscliffe.
