"What are you having for lunch?"
"Probably a sandwich."
"From where?"
"The Sandwich Shop."

If it's a sandwich you're after for lunch, then it is definitely worth it to check this place out. With such an ordinary name, The Sandwich Shop sure know how to deliver extraordinary simple sandwiches.

If you are lucky enough to work in the Surry Hills area - you should definitely add this place to your weekday lunch rotation. If you are not in the vicinity of the area, just like my addicted friends, they make time to trek into Surry Hills just to grab their favourite sandwiches.

So today I tagged along to see what's so special about a sandwich shop. I had my reservations about a limited menu that only consisted of a handful of sandwiches. As we walked down the hills on a chilly day, I questioned my hard effort to obtain such a sandwich to be worthwhile or not.

My doubts were vanquished when I saw a crowd gathered in front of this little sandwich shop. Diners seemed to be thoroughly enjoying their sandwiches on the side walks. My appetite surfaced at the sight of the juicy, hearty gourmet-looking sandwiches.

My quest was slightly hindered by a really long queue in front of the cash register.

The place is tiny with a heavy focus on takeaway.

We ordered the Reservoir St's Original Pulled Pork ($9.95) with slow-cooked seasoned pulled pork, coleslaw and House-made BBQ sauce on a toasted organic olive oil roll.

It's a given that pulled pork is irresistible, but this is outrageously good.

The famed pulled pork sandwich certainly did not disappoint. It looked so enticingly delicious and we did resist long enough to take few photos before we devoured into it.

It tasted amazing, aromatic and burst with hearty braised pull pork fillings.

The ingredients used were obviously high quality and the sandwich was structured and well put together. You can tell this was not a random concoction, it was well-thought out, tested and revised.

The menu is not extensive, I think there are only 9-10 choices on board. Unlike the typical suburban sandwich takeaway shop, you will not see rows of ingredients and busy sandwich hands slap slop your sandwich in front of you.

All sandwiches are freshly made at the back while you wait.

The sandwiches are strategically priced at $9.95 and the portion is quite generous. They also have some salad options but to be honest, the salads looked quite average.

For takeaway orders, they will give you a good old fashioned brown paper bag to carry away.

This is a cozy sandwich takeaway shop with a minimalist interior decoration. Nothing fancy here, just plain white boards. However, I am particularly fond of their motto:

"Life is like a sandwich. You have to fill it with the best ingredients."

You are what you eat. Why not have the best?

Accidentally, I saw other diners enjoying the signature Reuben Sandwich at the next table. I eyed the thick, juicy beef sourdough sandwich filled with sauerkraut and cheese with keen interest. It was dripping and oozed with melted cheese....I was mesmerized for a minute...

One sight of this sandwich will change the mind of even the fussiest eater.

I think another visit to this sandwich shop is a must!

Tip: Be sure to grab some really good coffee next door at Single Origin Roaster.
