A hidden gem on Toorak Road, The Rustic Table is a small and unassuming-looking deli not far away from another hidden gem, The Animal Liberation Op Shop .

This authentic Italian deli-café serves yummy sandwiches with your choice of bread, cold meats, cheese, antipasti and salad. Also on offer are a wide range of sweets –trendy cupcakes and macarons, and more traditional biscuits and cakes such as biscotti and pandoro.

My sandwich, a simple affair with mortadella, avocado and swiss cheese on ciabatta, was nonetheless delicious, and the Italian soft drinks we ordered- chinotto and a tiny (but intensely flavoured) apricot juice- also hit the spot.

One of the more unusual toppings offered is marinated green tomatoes-firmer and chewier than ripe tomatoes but seasoned, herby and tasty.

The Rustic Table also serves hot pasta, meat and vegetarian dishes.

Available to take home are cheeses, smallgoods, oils and other traditional ingredients.

The Rustic Table also does catering and hampers-perfect for Christmas.
