Are you sick of going to high concept blockbuster feature films which while dazzling, remain somewhat mediocre? Here's a solution – The Rum Diary. Based on the 1998 novel of the same name from the brilliant mind of Hunter S. Thompson, directed by Bruce Robinson and starring Hollywood superstar Johnny Depp; The Rum Diary has fantastic potential.
Set in San Juan, Puerto Rico the story follows struggling American freelance journalist Paul Kemp (Depp) as he exchanges the brutal American lifestyle for the Caribbean and the run down newspaper "The Daily News" owned by Lotterman (Richard Jenkins).
What transpires is a wild ride riddled with drug induced mischief and rum soaked mayhem that so many of Hunter S. Thompson's novels contain, such as his best known works in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and Fear and Loathingon the Campaign Trail 72'.
The genre of the film has been dubbed either adventure or drama but accommodates plenty of comedy along the way. The film deals with the challenge that every human has to deal with at some point in their life, "going over the hill" as a number of the characters are close to mid-life and learn to deal with this through self destructive drinking.
With Depp taking the lead act as Paul Kemp, the film's supporting actors include up and comers Amber Heard who plays the beautiful Chenault and Aaron Eckhart who plays the savvy investor Sanderson. The film is coming soon and opens in the U.S.A on the 28th of October and opens in the U.K on the 4th of November.
