We were needing a bite to eat before going to the Seymour Centre to see the play Grounded . Just after we parked the car, the sky opened up and it literally bucketed down. The rain was merciless. We ran to the nearest eatery – , just two minutes walk from the Seymour Centre.


When we arrived, the Rose Hotel was crowded and noisy. Most tables were full and animated conversations were going on all around us. We managed to get a table and ordered our meal. My companion for this evening discussed the old days of the Rose Hotel, when the uni students used to frequent The Rose. Reminiscing back thirty years, the pub has changed significantly since then. It now has fairy lights above, three cherubs keeping an eye on the jovial atmosphere and a pool table taking centre stage among the diners, some who were having a beer, playing pool and bantering with their mates at the same time. I had to admire their multi-tasking.


There is also a large fish tank behind the bar. It's not everyday that one sees a fish tank in a pub – I have to get out more.


The buzzer alerted us that our meals were ready for collection. My companion ordered the chargrilled lamb pieces marinated in Nepalese spices with puffed rice and very spicy pickles. The lamb pieces were superb. They were juicy and tasty. The puffed rice were interesting. Different sized grains of puffed rice and when pushed through the pieces of lamb, were delicious. The pickles were spicy hot so only half of these were eaten.


My dish was a lamb burger with beetroot relish, tzatziki, lettuce, tomato and cheese. It was the relish and tzatziki which set this burger apart from other simpler versions. The relish and tzatziki oozed out the burger over the crisp fries.

Afterwards we walked upstairs to see what the Marmalade function space is like. There is a bar with an inviting indoor area for guests and the outdoor terrace overlooks the beer garden below. There are stylish chesterfield couches to relax plus the regular assortment of chairs and stools found in pubs.

has a number of events each day of the week. So if you're feeling bored or want to socialise or you want to listen to great music, there is something that will attract you to The Rose. For fans of Twin Peaks, season 1 will be showing every Thursday night at 7 pm starting May 7.

The food was good in this well-established hotel that has been around for over 100 years.
