If the legend is true, one of Paddington's most elusive residents is the greatest adventurer of both the nineteenth and the twentieth century. Remmie Rennard, cooling his paws after a lifetime of perilous voyaging, has opened an alluring little establishment at 106 Latrobe Terrace.

A friend and I discovered The Rogue Rennard's al fresco courtyard as we walked along the ridges of Paddington last weekend. We stuck our heads in for a look and were impressed by the charm of the buzzing café's interior—furnished (according to the website ) with items procured by the vulpine adventurer on his many expeditions.

We took a table in the courtyard, ordered coffee, and perused the menu. Now, this Remmie fellow, he may be something of a genius, I think. Albert Einstein once wrote, 'imagination is more important than knowledge… imagination encircles the world', and the menu at The Rogue Rennard beautifully illustrates his point. Dishes such as the 'Madame Mushroom' and 'Painted Harlot' are inspired yet simple creations, elegant yet inexpensive, testament to a French love for food and a tacit finesse with flavour. I can now recommend the 'Jewels of the Nile' as must-try Paddington fare, a combination of black, brown and wild rice, smoked chicken, cashews, currants and a subtle keep-you-guessing dressing… Sacre bleu.

You know you're in good hands when the barista has ten years of coffee-making under his belt—I asked him, you see, after tasting his coffee I don't know that I'll ever be happy anywhere else again. This Mr Rennard has appointed a very capable crew to keep things sailing, that much is certain, and when I enquired as to the whereabouts of the adventurer himself I was told he was somewhere in the jungles of South America and that I could expect new delights upon his return. I will be back, not only for the amazing coffee, but in the hope that I'll catch a glimpse of this trail-blazing Remmie 'The Rogue' Rennard.
