Kids don't need to be convinced of the benefits of rock climbing -- they just love to climb. But, in case parents need some convincing, rock climbing is an activity that combines the use of physical strength and skills together with mental stamina, and requires some persistence.
The Rock, an indoor rock climbing facility based at The Spot Community Centre in Browns Plains, is a place for kids to climb, swing on ropes (yes, just like Tarzan) and soar into the air.
The Rock has eight metre high walls and 15 ropes for climbing, as well as equipment for several other activities. The rock climbing is colour-coded, according to levels, so the inexperienced can do the easier climbs first.
Kids love the climbing, but The Rock does cater for all ages. The centre caters for groups and can organise functions for adults as well as children.
They provide a great venue for birthday parties. There is a kitchen available for use and an area with tables and chairs for setting up the food. The staff keep the kids well entertained with various games and, of course, the rock climbing. Apart from the food, parents just need to provide a couple of adults or teenagers to assist with belaying.
Kids are encouraged to climb to the height that they are comfortable going, but it's heart-warming to see the look of satisfaction on their faces when they struggle, but persevere to reach a high point on the wall.
In addition to general sessions, there is a Kid's Club that operates at The Rock on a Wednesday afternoon from 3.30pm to 5pm. The cost is $10 per child and the session includes games as well as rock climbing.
Large groups will receive an admission discount and VIP membership is available.
