The artist who was born in Iran and currently lives in UK. She is a multi-talented artist who is keen to emphasise the interconnectivity of humanity.
Her latest artworks will be shown together with 'Breath' at STPI Creative Workshop & Gallery. With 'The River Is Within Us', Houshiary worked with thin layers of handmade paper and Perspex, illuminating a selected single word in Hebrew, Sanskrit, Arabic, Mandarin and Latin. She is interested in words and the fact that all cultures have tried to preserve their languages.
According to writer and critic Sue Hubbard, "language is what connects us to civilisation and to the wider universe. We speak, therefore we are. It defines us as sentient, imaginative beings." Text has been employed by Houshiary here as a means to "capture breath", symbolic of one's "own existence, transcending name, nationality and cultures."
Shirazeh Houshiary and Sue Hubbard: In Conversations will be held on 19 March 2.30pm. Free Entry.
