Being the daughter of a second-hand dealer has certainly made me realise from a very early age, that nothing is rubbish; an item can always be reused, recycled or made into something else. Saying that, there are heaps of second-hand shops, renovation barns and opportunity stores across Brisbane just waiting for an interested person to grab a bargain.

A friend pointed me in the direction of in Salisbury and after checking them out on the web, I couldn't wait to make a trip there. Best of all, they are open weekends.

On entry I wasn't sure where I was heading as the entrance led me through a long hallway with carpet, rugs, paintings and hall tables along each side of the wall but opened into a massive open undercover area with everything you could imagine; literally including the kitchen sink! Definitely an "awe" factor and a renovator's dream. Where do I start?

After having an initial chat to the store-person I mentioned I was just there for a look around, but I could not get over how much stock they had. He said, if I needed any good quality lounge chairs and furniture , there was a good range ex-Marriott Hotel in store as well as numerous of other furniture. Lights of every shape, size and design hung from the rafters and no one could ever say there wasn't a variety or choice. There are also smaller knick-knack items in glass cases, which include items such as posters, antiques, collector memorabilia etc. Oh, and if you are looking for a horse carriage, they have that too.

You can get lost in a massive warehouse like this going from one thing to another, so I tried to keep to one side of the store before venturing to the other. Rows and rows of windows in leadlight designs and plain, plantation shutters, security screens, doors and more had me wandering in and out of the rows thinking of all the places I could use the items.

If you are on a tight budget and are a handy person or have a handy person at home, average and large fully complete kitchen units in different designs were on display and available for purchase, along with all the cupboards and basin equipment for a bathroom reno, including the lavatory.

Out the back in the yard area there is everything for outside the home , steel, timber , gates, a small range of plants, pots, garden ornaments - you name it and you will find it. I suggest if you are looking for timber, it is best to bring a pair of gloves and a tape measure, otherwise you may come home like I did, with a splinter as well as the timber!

The Renovators Barn is a family owned and operated business, which started in Ipswich twelve years ago, the later five having been in Salisbury. The warehouse backs onto a reserve and has a large rocky mountain as its back fence creating a natural backdrop for an area full of timber, garden ornaments and the like.

I couldn't fault the staff on the Sunday I visited as they were more than happy to talk about my ideas and give suggestions.
