The Relish Cafe - Can the desert handle such trendiness?
It can be difficult in Kalgoorlie to find a cafe that has the chic and quirkiness readily found in the big cities. The Relish Cafe however, matches the trendiness and funk of its metropolitan counterparts and then some.
Located on Hannan St, Kalgoorlie, The Relish is an eclectic blend of old fashioned home-style cooking with a modern twist, served in retro surroundings that would make many city siders feel at home.
From the unassuming street front, with its mis-matched 1970s chairs and tables to the industrial interior with exposed steel beams, drop lights and white washed brick walls, The Relish beckons diners to indulge.
Manager Lucy, a Kalgoorlie local for 16 years, makes all the baked goods and treats herself. From shortbread cookies, anzac biscuits, as well as gluten free options, through to savoury muffins, baked cheescake varieties, coconut slices and an unusual lemon and blueberry ricotta pound cake.
Breakfast is served until 11am, and has all the usual suspects....French toast, bacon and poached eggs and eggs Benedict, vegetarian options, and "folded eggs" - The Relish take on a traditional omelette. Whilst the "Big Breakfast" wasn't quite as large as one would expect, it was still enjoyable. Kids are also catered for with a kids menu that will tempt fussy eaters.
Lunch options are from a pre-made selection and include a corned beef, caramelised onion and cheese baguette, a vegie wrap with spinach, pumpkin, eggplant, capsicum, pesto and fetta, and a chicken, spinach and sundried tomato roll.
The coffee is good, and the service welcoming. For those who don't have time to sit and enjoy, The Relish offer an SMS ordering system. Text your name, order and ETA to 0456 619 730 and it will be ready to collect.
In keeping with its eclectic feel, The Relish seems to attract everyone. From the business professionals on laptops and smart phones to mine workers, mums with prams and those catching up with friends over coffee, the cafe is buzzing. To quote a fellow diner "This café is the only point of difference in Kalgoorlie".
The Relish Cafe, 202 Hannan St, Kalgoorlie, is open from 6am to 2pm Monday to Friday, and 7am to 2pm on Saturday.
