It is not necessary that whilst I live I live happily; but it is necessary that so long as I live I should live honourably.

Quarter only by name, it's the complete Degraves package
Located in the heartland of city cafe/restaurants that is Degraves St, The Quarter looks like many other of the busy cafes that line this strip from both the outside and in. There are, however, some subtle differences that set The Quarter apart.
The first is the extensive menu for both breakfast and lunch/dinner and having had many a dinner here before, my partner and I this time came looking for breakfast. Unfortunately the normal breakfast menu had finished by the time we got there. This really was a shame as the E.U. breakfast sounded amazing. Is 1:30pm really an unreasonable time for breakfast? Well, probably... Anyway, they have a small "sleepy-heads" breakfast menu, for the likes of us, that runs till 5pm. I ordered the Bull Fighter, a Spanish omelette filled with chorizo, bacon, onion, potato and chilli, and my partner the optimistically titled Corpse Reviver - poached eggs with mushrooms, spinach and snow pea tendrils on organic sourdough.
The food took about half an hour to arrive, which is probably to be expected at peak lunch time on Degraves St. Although my omelette may not look like much, it certainly packs a punch. Spicy, but not overpowering. The chorizo really makes this dish and complements the other classic Spanish flavours perfectly. My partner was happy with hers as well, but she did say it was a tad bland and unimaginative.
The service here is also a little different. When we first arrived it seemed like it was going to be the same story as the other places along Degraves St as the staff seemed somewhat uninterested in us. Actually, they seemed uninterested in us the whole time, but they were always there when we needed them and a quick nod is all it took to call them over; a refreshing change from other places nearby.
The coffee at The Quarter is invariably excellent, with deep, rich tones and a delicious earthiness that I love. Only one place does it better on this street, the aptly named Degraves Espresso Bar. They set the bar ludicrously high though and The Quarter does well to come a close second.
For breakfast (early or late), lunch or dinner, The Quarter is an excellent place for an informal bite to eat or just to enjoy a coffee. Try coming in the late afternoon for the ultimate laid-back atmosphere.
