The Princess And The Pea, imaginatively adapted and illustrated by Janet Stevens, is a beautiful book, about a prince, who travels far and wide, to find a "real" princess.
He meets many princesses during his travels, but his mother, the queen, is not satisfied that any of them are truly ladylike or delicate enough to be a "real" princess, for the young prince to marry.
Then one night, during a terrible storm, a young girl knocks on the castle door, claiming to be a real princess, but she is drenched and wind blown and doesn't look at all like a princess, so the queen makes a special bed, with one tiny pea, beneath it, with charming results.
This story has been beautifully retold, with all the characters, portrayed as beautiful wild animals, in extravagant clothing.
This book was published in 1982, by Holiday House Book, New York.
