Located opposite Black Cow Bistro , The Prickly Cactus specialises in Mexican cuisine. Diners who visit during lunchtime can enjoy a selection of lunch specials that are more affordable than their main-sized dinner dishes.

One of their lunch specials, the strips of chicken in the Spicy Chicken and Avocado Salad had succulent flesh and were of a good size. The crumb coating set off the flesh nicely and had a mild spiced taste. Avocado provided a change of texture from the salad greens, and the chilli and lime dressing gave the salad a tangy taste. While not mentioned in the dish’s description, the dish had a light drizzling of balsamic vinegar.

Another of their lunch specials, the portion size of their Mexican Paella is sufficient for sharing. The rice was light and fluffy and had a delightful spiced taste. Both the chicken and beef were cooked just right, and the prawns did not taste fishy. The prawns were left with their heads on to give the dish an eye-catching appearance.

For dessert, we chose the Kahlua Ice Cream and Churros Bowl. While the churros bowl is a bit tricky to cut into, it was still crisp and light, and the cinnamon sugar did not make it too sweet. The Kahlua sauce had the boozy flavour we expected and was balanced by the vanilla ice cream. Finishing the dish was whipped cream and fresh strawberries.

The decor gave the restaurant a rustic feel with a good amount of seating space. Its location makes it accessible for those in Launceston CBD who are looking for a place offering Mexican cuisine.
