Event:
Assist Uganda's women by learning the art of hand lettering
Every now and then I come across an organisation I have never heard of before, which initiates my inquisitive mind to search who they are, what they do and mostly who initially founded the organisation. Watoto was founded in 1984 by Gary and Marilyn Skinner through the community-based Watoto Church.

Uganda's people have endured much hardship due to corrupt and oppressive ruler where over a million people died through genocide-type atrocities. Women were left widowed and children orphaned. As well as this, an epidemic of AIDS crippled the lives of the many left behind.

Gary was changed forever when he met a 79-year old women in the village of Kansanga. He learned that she was the mother of seven children who had died and had also lost her husband to AIDS. In 1994, Watoto Child Care Ministries was established as a result of this meeting. Watoto began with one simple house in Kansanga where eight orphans and a widow were given a new start in life.

Inspired by the work Watoto has been doing for the women in Uganda, Organiser Jade Sweeney, secured her dream job working for Watoto's Brisbane office in the Donor Support Team.

The Power in a Letter fundraiser is focusing specifically on Watoto's program "Neighbourhood Mother", which teaches Uganda's most vulnerable women a craft or marketable skill and educates them with the knowledge to start their own business. This gives the women an opportunity to create a sustainable life of dignity for themselves and their family.

Organiser Jade Sweeney from Ark & Deer is holding a creative fundraiser on Saturday 25 November at Northgate Hall from 10.00am to 1.00pm. The name of the event is "The Power in a Letter". The thought behind the name is the idea that a single letter has a vital part to play. Without a letter, there would be no words, no poems, no essays. In the same way each individual person who attends the workshop is playing their individual part of the collective whole to effect change in the lives of Ugandan women.

During the first half of the workshop, you will learn the art of hand lettering which is similar to the penning of modern calligraphy. Cost of the workshop is $35.00 per person.

In the second half of the morning, Jade will explain more about Watoto and the cause. You will be given the opportunity to make a tax-deductible donation or pick up some early Christmas stocking gifts.

Jade is also offering other Brisbane businesses the opportunity to assist in this fundraiser by providing merchandise for sale or promoting their website through business cards which will be handed out at the workshop.

A video on the event can be located on the website and this will give you an understanding of the thought behind the fundraiser. If you want any further information or can assist on the day, please contact Jade Sweeney on 0416 642 587 or email jade@arkandeer.com. Bookings for the workshop can be purchased through EventBrite.
