The Well Versed Poetry Performance Group is pleased to share with the people of Perth, a selection of poems that reflect Mary Durack's fascination with the history of the north of our state and her spiritual link to the indigenous people and their culture.

As part of the Perth Heritage Days, this reading is on Sunday 15 October at 3.00pm in the auditorium of the City of Perth library . Mary Durack's daughter, Patsy Millett will contribute to the reading.

Entry is free.

Mary Durack is recognised as one of Australia's most celebrated authors. Born into a pioneering heritage, she and her siblings spent their early years on cattle properties in the remote East Kimberley. Close contact with Aborigines on Argle Downs and Ivanhoe stations led to an abiding respect and admiration for the dispossessed indigenous people with whom she would later mourn the loss of country, when the Argyle Valley was flooded for the Ord River dam.

She is best known for her family story which have become classics being "Kings in Grass Castles" and "Sons in the Saddle". Her talent extended to fiction, short stories, drama and verse. Of all her writing gifts, verse was her first and greatest love and she produced some of the finest and most moving examples of her creative inspiration. While pieces such as "Ben Hartigan", "Dalgerie's Song" and "Lament to a Drowned Country" were widely published, they have been seldom performed.

Among Mary Durack's many honours and awards she was made Dame of the British Empire in 1978, for her contribution to Literature and appointed a Companion of the Order of Autralia in 1989.
