Being early for an appointment and perhaps time to actually notice things around me, I came across "The Plum Tree", situated in the arcade of shops at 51 Old Cleveland Road, Capalaba. The Plum Tree is a craft shop with the goal of supporting local crafters. Commencing with a small number of creative people showcasing their artistic talents, owner Karen Cross said there was always room for some more. The business has now expanded with 20 plus crafters, all with a talent this is uniquely their own. Karen doesn't charge a commission on the items sold, instead the stockists rent a space in the shop.

There is something for everyone. Baby and Children's Wear by Mischief N Giggles , Tu Tu Tiger and Jen's Crocheted Homemade Baby Items, Missy Megee's, Forgotten Wooden Toys, Kids Kreative Sand Art Kits and Angie's Plaster Pieces all of which will keep the little ones busy through the holidays. Chalkboard placemats (suitable for 2 years and up) made from Mexican oil cloth are the intuitive design of Obsession Handmade Unique Gifts and at $17.50 each these are an excellent idea to for children to use in the car on what seems to be a long drive to a holiday destination.

What captured my eye and took me back to primary school was Janice's beautifully hand crocheted dolls dresses displayed on the dolls themselves. Fond memories came flooding back as I remembered my Grandmother had also made similar garments for my dolls when I was a child. Such a treasured craft and something we do not see much of these days.

Nothing is nicer than receiving a handmade birthday card and stockists for these are from Marg's Cards in a Box and Stamping Memories. Stamping Memories also have bookmarks and jewellery for purchase. Your wedding or birthday stationery can be custom made by Kruse Kreations who have a great table decoration idea for weddings and birthdays with glasses or vases filled with coloured sand or specialise your invitations by attaching a small bottle of coloured sand complete with a message. Soy candles supplied by Light Up YOURlife can be purchased in a variety of scents, sizes and colours and are of very affordable prices from as little as $1.00.

Quilts in all sizes, couch covers, cushion cases and monogramed towels are made by Snug as a Bug Quilts, Wooden Pens and Key Rings by Mark Molloy and Resin crystal key rings, magnets, sun-catchers, Chakra jewellery from Day Dream'z. Day Dream'z proprietor Tania, also custom makes sun-catchers. Whilst incorporating her knowledge of Numerology, Tania only needs the client's full date of birth and favourite colour to create a piece especially for you.

For any special occasion or just because you deserve it, purchase your drinking glasses uniquely painted with non-toxic paints by "Glassy Chick". Glassy Chick can accommodate pre-ordering of large quantities of specialised glasses for occasions such as weddings, birthdays, corporate events etc.

Christmas and other wall hangings as well as paintings by Chrissie Mac adorn the walls of the shop. One of the newest stockists is Liz from Stanthorpe Zensations who has produced a range of calming oils that work with your body's energy systems and the energy in your environment. Choose from Calm Down Spray, Space Clearing and Space Clearing for Therapists, Sleep Tight Spray and Personal Balancing Spray.

Handmade Artesian Polymer Clay Jewellery by SanDeeLee Design uses a technique of layering blended layers of clay to create ornate "canes" (much like millefiori) which are then sliced and further manipulated to form flower blossoms. These are then bake-cured to harden and form very intricate, yet light, durable and wearable works of art. Many of the pieces have a distinctive vintage flavour and SanDeeLee is inspired by the kaleidoscope of the World that surrounds us. She also has a fondness for Alice in Wonderland. Pieces are priced at $10.00 for rings, and necklaces start around $25.00.

Other jewellery suppliers are Joan's Jewellery Box, My Jewellery Box , It's a Bling Thing, Hooked on Craft, Medusa Art, Accessories with Me and on the first Tuesday of each month, Pamela Horton holds jewellery classes made from recycled paper, hemp and bamboo. One of Pamela's pieces, a paper necklace in the shape of my favourite sweet, liquorice allsorts was priced for just $8.00, and I couldn't help but purchase.

Apart from being a talented crafter herself, Karen also reads your palms. Completely different from Palmistry, Karen has the ability to see pictures in your palms that create a story of an approximate 6-week period. Unlike other spiritual readings that should be only undertaken once or twice a year, the skin on your palms shed every 6-weeks, enabling them to be read on a 6-weeks basis, if that is your choice. Cost of a palm reading is $45 for 30 minutes and I'm waiting to see how my hand reading unfolds.

Launching "The Word on Chocolate" shortly, Karen is producing individual chocolates for such events as corporate functions, birthdays, weddings etc. These can incorporate a special age or company logo. Along with this, a coffee shop is in the planning stages.

Coming up Karen hopes to have an Art Auction in January 2015 with 50% of the proceeds going to the Smith Family. The Plum Tree will also be holding Wine & Cheese Reading Nights at $40/ person, where readers will provide a presentation on any particular subject followed by a few brief readings.

Off street parking is provided in front of the shop so you will not have to walk the block from your parked vehicle. With Christmas just around the corner The Plum Tree is well worth the effort to drop in to have a look.
